THOMASVILLE- Thomasville Scholars Academy junior Ella Kate Carroll was recently announced the winner of the inaugural Thomasville Bulldogs vs. Thomas County Central Yellow Jackets rival t-shirt competition.

Carroll was excited when she was announced the winner, as this is the first year the design opportunity has been opened to students.

“Last year it wasn’t student-led, someone else designed the shirts,” she explained. “This is the first year they’ve allowed students to submit something.”

The competition was open to all Thomasville students, however it was Carroll’s mom who saw the call for artwork and encouraged her to participate.

“My mom saw it on Facebook and told me I should do it, so I submitted an email with my drawing,” Carroll explained.

While artwork comes natural to Carroll, a digital rendering on a t-shirt was a new experience for her.

“I really like to paint, so I paint a lot on canvas, but I haven’t ever really done digital art or something you can put on a t-shirt,” she said.

Carroll began her award-winning t-shirt design by talking with friends and fans about common phrases used during the rivalry game and finally came across a design idea after hearing “Dawgs on Top.”

The design features the Thomasville Bulldog on top of the TCC Yellow Jacket with Dawgs on Top sprawled across the side.

She sketched out the design before transferring it to the t-shirt, which was a hit among students and faculty alike.

Along with her winning shirt design, which will be sold at the Diamond T store, Carroll received $100 and four shirts for her family to don at the game.

The shirts cost $20, with all proceeds benefitting the THS CTAE and JROTC program. They can be purchased any Friday during football season from 10 a.m.- 5:30 p.m. Carroll hopes everyone will consider purchasing a shirt, as she looks to hopefully expand her artistic horizons and design more shirts in the future, and encourages others to do so as well.

“I would tell anyone who has never tried digital art to give it a go,” she said. “The worst thing that can happen is it doesn’t win and you try again next year.”

Carroll would like for the competition to continue next year, allowing her to try digital art once more with her fellow students.
